Backups
The type of backups recommended for your organization will be determined by the operating system of your server, the application(s) you are running and the speed you need your system running again.
Windows/Linux
DTR recommends a backup recovery device that takes snapshot backups of your system every hour to an onsite backup device called a BDR. The BDR also creates an offsite backup on the Internet of your server. If your server goes down due to a hardware failure or a software issue/virus, the onsite BDR can turn into your server. If your facility suffers a loss like a flood/fire and the server and the BDR is lost, your business can use the Internet BDR to run your business. Once your server is repaired/replaced, the data from the BDR is synced to the new server and the BDR becomes a backup device again.
A BDR allows a very quick recovery from a down server. Typical response times are about 30 minutes to diagnose the seriousness of the issue and get the BDR converted to a server. More traditional backup solutions require you to order replacement parts, reload all or part of the operating system and reload the data which could take several days. The amount of data on newer Microsoft/Linux servers also provide a challenge when using a traditional backup solution. Older backups are once a day snapshot of the server and they might take 8-12 hours to complete depending the amount of data.
SCO Unix/Older Linux Servers
DTR recommends using a program such as Backup Edge to backup your SCO Unix and older Linux servers. These legacy systems are significantly smaller than current Microsoft/Linux servers and do not take a long time to create a backup. DTR recommend several onsite daily backups to devices NAS appliances and an offsite backup to a service such as Amazon. Higher availability options are available if the server is running on a virtualized server. Backup Edge also offers emergency boot media to facilitate recovering from a down server.
